Seung-Hwan's Biography
Seung-Hwan Baek is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at POSTECH, where he is also affiliated with the Graduate School of AI. He leads the POSTECH Computational Imaging Group and serves as a faculty co-director of the POSTECH Computer Graphics Lab.
Seung-Hwan Baek's research lies at the intersection of computer graphics, computer vision, artificial intelligence, and optics. He focuses on capturing, modeling, and analyzing high-dimensional visual data originating from the complex interplays between light, material appearance, and geometry. His work has practical applications across mobile cameras, robotics, autonomous vehicles, VR/AR displays, and scientific instruments.
Prior to joining POSTECH in December 2021, Seung-Hwan Baek was a Postdoctoral Researcher at Princeton University working with Felix Heide. He earned a Ph.D. in 2019 from KAIST under the supervision of Min H. Kim, and recently served as a visiting professor at the University of Toronto in 2025.
Seung-Hwan Baek serves as Program Chair for the International Conference on Computational Photography (ICCP) 2026 and was the Local Arrangement Chair for Pacific Graphics 2023. He frequently serves on program committees for prestigious conferences, including SIGGRAPH, SIGGRAPH Asia, ICCP, Eurographics, and Pacific Graphics.
Seung-Hwan Baek's contributions to the field have been recognized with honors, including the Asiagraphics Young Researcher Award, the Frontiers of Science Award from the International Congress of Basic Science, the Outstanding Ph.D. Thesis Award from the Korean Academy of Science and Technology, the Microsoft Research Asia Ph.D. Fellowship, and the Best Application Paper and Best Demo Awards at ACCV.
